Adolescence/Life/Community

"Life is a constant struggle between being an individual and being a member of the community." - Gordy, p. 130

"Surely adolescence is mostly about figuring out which tribes you belong to and how to follow your dreams." - Sherman Alexie

How do these quotes apply to Junior?

Why do you think the title includes "Part-Time Indian?"

  1. They apply to Junior because he is always trying to figure out whether he wants to be himself or be like everyone else in the tribe.

  2. Both of these quotes apply to Junior because throughout the book he's basically trying to find himself.

  3. Both these quotes apply to Junior because he is living and struggling with being himself
and he writes that list of tribes

  4. He was trying to say is that when you are an adolescent you are trying to find out who you are.

  5. I think these quotes describe Arnold perfectly. Throughout the book Arnold is in a constant struggle to fit in but at the same time he is following his dreams.

  6. Throughout the book Junior is attempting to find himself in a crowd of people that look and sound and act the same as he does, which is why it took his symbolic move to Reardan High to establish himself as an individual voice -- among people who look, sound and act totally different than him.

  7. Because being an adolescent is about rebelling from the group.

  8. Junior tries to find who he really is. And tries not to get beat up. He is split between two groups who for the most part hate each other.

  9. Junior leaves and decides to branch out. He struggles being in the community because he has a barrier that he isn't allowed to pass. He isn't supposed to drink and etc. He has boundaries he can't pass because he could get hurt or killed.

  10. The title includes Part Time Indian because he is always torn between Indian and White.

  11. The title includes "part time indian" because Junior is an indian when he is on the rez but when he is at rearden he is really just another normal person who isn't seen as a indian.

  12. When Junior first leaves the rez, he feels like he doesn't belong anywhere, and he doesn't know what he wants to be. By the end of the book, he finds that he now belongs to many different "tribes". He still isn't sure what he wants to do, but he knows that he's going to collage.

  13. I think that Junior calls himself a "part time Indian" because he doesn't feel like everybody else on the rez. he goes to school with white kids and the Indians think of him as an outcast, so he starts to think that way himself.

  14. he is a part time indian because he leaves the rez to go to school and then goes to the re to sleep and eat. So he is thre only part of the time.

  15. I think that Sherman Alexie refers to himself as a 'Part-Time' Indian because he had lived at the reservation as a child, but he decided that he would rather go to Reardan to get a better chance at succeeding in life.

  16. These quotes apply to Junior because the topics that the quotes are about are connected to the problems Junior faces in the story. Junior is a part time Indian because he spends part of his time with the Indians and part of his time with people at Reardan.

  17. I agree with Maeve on the quote:"Surely adolescence is mostly about figuring out which tribes you belong to and how to follow your dreams." - Sherman Alexie In terms of this quote, being an adolescent is about rebelling from the group!

  18. Sherman Alexie called himself a part-time Indian for many reasons. The main reason was he lived on the Rez, but he went to a white person's school. People considered him a traitor for leaving the Rez, but he still considers himself Indian

  19. i agree with Eric.
Junior knows staying on the rez and going to the Indian school would not pay off. Why not go to Reardan and get a good education where he has a much better chance in succeeding?

  20. I think the book was called the .... of a Part Time Indian because Junior tried to only think of himself as an Indian when he was on the rez. He referred to himself as an apple with proves the part time indian statement.

  21. It's called a Part Time Indian because he grows up in the Rez but leaves and makes something out of his life by going to Rearden. THANK YOU I WILL NOW TAKE QUESTIONS.

  22. Junior is an apple. If you leave him alone and simply look at him, he is an Indian. But prod him, dig a little deeper, and his other part is white. When he is at home he is part white and is diffrent because he goes to school with the whites. when he is at school he is part Indian, becuase he lives on the rez

  23. Junior wants to be a part of the Reardan High School community, yet most adolescents want to be "independent" and "different". In this way, Junior is like the Reardan-ers.

I believe he is a "Part-Time Indian" because when he goes to school, he is white; when he is home (on the Rez) he is a Native American. At school he has to be white, but really he is always a Native American.
